A Funday Sunday

27th September 2018

On Sunday September 23rd Run Northwest organised a 10k Southport Seaside run (and a 2k Childrens Run) which attracted 1500 runners.    The main charity to benefit this year was Galloway’s Society for the Blind but each entrant was encouraged to bring along a donation for the foodbank.

Along with Galloway’s, Southport Foodbank was asked to provide volunteers to marshal this event and on a crisp morning we gathered in Princes Park for our briefing from the organisers.   We were there to direct runners onto the correct route and to ensure their safe passage across any roads that had not been closed for the duration of the run.  The whole event was organised in an extremely professional manner and passed off like clockwork.   The marshals all enjoyed taking part and interacting with the runners as they passed by, most looking much fresher the first time around than on the second lap to complete their 10 kilometres!

The Foodbank benefitted from  the donation 136kg of food and a raising of our profile in the community.

On the Facebook page for Run NorthWest there are a plethora of  photos and, reading the runners’ comments,  plenty of compliments for the marshals.

We hope to be involved again in future years.
